DIAL/SELF WMAIA 2020 Design Awards

MERIT AWARD WINNER

JWA is proud to have received the 2020 WMAIA MERIT DESIGN AWARD for DIAL/SELF Northampton Youth Housing, a four unit micro housing project for young adults at risk of homelessness.

Led by Henry Albin, AIA, and Principal Dorrie Brooks, AIA, the project is one of a series of recent projects JWA has taken on to explore ways of responding to the region’s critical housing shortages with innovative design. The design presents a modern take on farmhouse architecture and fits comfortably into a  single family neighborhood across from a vocational high school. The micro units are 300 sf apartments with built-in furnishings and shared amenities, a small drop-in center and meeting space for outreach workers.

Built by Keiter Builders, the project achieves a low 20.5 EUI and is net-zero capable thanks to a rooftop photovoltaic array provided by Northeast Solar.

this year’s WMAIA Design Awards were judged on the AIA Frameworks, a set of values centered on sustainable, resilient and equitable designs. The new criteria were intended to be “accessible and relevant for every architect, every client, and every project, regardless of size, typology, or aspiration.”
